too much blackness

I was wandering around my day thinking of sensory images. I'm one of those people who is moved by colors. In the winter time, I'm especially aware of color and contrasts. The white of the snow with the sun shining on it contrasted with the chocolate, brown bark. The cardinals that play around my black bird feeder. Even in wintertime there is color. But, on the Metrolink today, I saw bleakness everywhere. Washed out, weary faces, too many black coats, black bags, black hats. People lacking color. Too much black and not enough anything else. Black clothes are hip, goth, and slimming. Color is childish, and white shows lumps.

I say, bring on the crimson, the cobalt, the cantaloupe, the plums and emeralds,  the egg yolk yellows, the flowered prints, the red lipstick, the blue eyeshadow. Anything. Be colorful. Be alive. Be a flower. Be a bird. No more poured concrete and beige rooms. Bring on the flowered wallpaper and berry-colored walls. Vivid colors make you feel alive, awake, and happy.

Do this in your writing and your life. Think vividly.

I've been wearing lots of pinks and turquoise shirts to the gym with my (ahem) black pants.
